Manifesto

Notes Toward a Better Branch

Found in the margins. Unsigned. Pass it on.

  1. Note 01 / 07

The future is not coming. It is being made, right now, by whoever bothers to imagine it.

    Remember that.

  2. Note 02 / 07

Most of the future is decided by people who never think about it. A setting left on default. A rule nobody reads. A feature shipped because a number went up.

Each one is small. Each one is reasonable. Put enough reasonable things in a row and you can walk anywhere, even somewhere nobody would ever have chosen.

That is how the water warms. Not with a shout. With an update.

  3. Note 03 / 07

We are very good at optimising. We can make almost anything five per cent faster, cheaper, stickier.

But optimising only finds the top of the hill you are already standing on. It cannot see the other hills. It cannot ask whether we should be climbing at all.

    Only imagination can do that.

  4. Note 04 / 07

The storytellers got there first. They saw the screen that watches back, the friend who is a product, the worker who is a line on a spreadsheet on the far side of the Moon.

They were not predicting. They were warning, and they were hoping. Both take nerve. We need both.

  5. Note 05 / 07

So here is what I have come to believe.

    • Dreaming is reconnaissance. Send it ahead of you.
    • A future you cannot picture is a future you cannot choose.
    • Big leaps are possible. Every freedom we take for granted was once a fantasy someone was told to stop talking about.
    • The slow boil only works on those who never look up. Look up.
    • Fear the future nobody decided more than the one somebody argues for out loud.
    • Never ask only will it work? Ask what will it make of us?
    • Write the better version down. A thing described can be built. A thing built can be copied.
  6. Note 06 / 07

They will tell you this is just how things are. It isn't. It is how things were arranged, by people, for reasons. Arrangements change.

The future is being written everywhere: in policy, in products, in habits, in how we treat each other in the queue.

Think in ten-year sentences. Act in one-day steps.

  7. Note 07 / 07

Somewhere ahead there is a version of all this we would be proud to live in. We are not there yet. But we can see it from here, if we keep our eyes open and our imaginations unoptimised.

Keep reading. Keep dreaming. Keep the water cool.

The branch point is now. It is always now.
